Best Time of Year to Film in Sri Lanka: Seasons & Monsoon (2026)

Sri Lanka's weather confuses first-time producers because the island runs TWO monsoons on opposite coasts. That sounds like a problem; it's actually an advantage — somewhere on the island is almost always in its dry season.

The two monsoons

The Yala (south-west) monsoon runs roughly May to September and brings rain to the west and south coasts and the central hills. The Maha (north-east) monsoon runs roughly October to January and brings rain to the north and east. Between them sit shorter inter-monsoon spells (March–April, October–November) that can bring afternoon thunderstorms anywhere.

Best windows by region

• West & south coast (Colombo, Galle, the southern beaches) + the Cultural Triangle: best December to March — dry, bright, the classic season.
• East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay): best May to September, when the south is wet — the opposite calendar.
• Tea highlands: drivable year-round but mistier and wetter in the south-west monsoon; clearest mornings December to March.

Heat, light & crowds

It's tropical year-round, so plan early-morning and late-afternoon calls for the best light and to avoid the midday heat and haze. Note the peak tourist season (December–March) for busier heritage sites, and the big cultural events — Kandy's Esala Perahera (July/August) is spectacular but books out the hill country.
